The first specimen assignable to the political region that defines Kansas today, was collected in . Since then, over 50,187 Kansas specimens have been cataloged in 44 different collections. These biological collections contribute to society and science in many ways; including public health and safety, serving as a baseline in perpetuity for monitoring environmental change, and are fundemental in taxonomy and systematics.
